Marathon des Sables Morocco
In 2008, James Matthews, Michael’s brother, completed the Marathon des Sables, an ultra-marathon approximately the distance of six regular marathons, with the longest single stage of the race being 57 miles long.
Considered to be one of the toughest footraces on earth, it is held each year in the Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco, one of the world’s most inhospitable climates.
Competitors are supplied with water and a primitive, roof-only, tent. Other than that, they are required to carry everything else they need for six-day duration of the race.
None of the costs of entering the Marathon des Sables fell on the Charity, having been borne in full by members of Michael’s family. Every penny raised benefited directly the young people whom MMF supports. This has been a guiding principle of the Foundation from the start.
